Gehazi’s Greed and the Leprosy of Naaman

In the biblical account of 2 Kings 5, Gehazi, the servant of the prophet Elisha, becomes the “unfaithful servant” who sought personal gain from the healing of Naaman, the commander of the Aramean army.

The Healing of Naaman

Naaman, a leper, sought healing from Elisha after hearing of the prophet’s miracles. Elisha instructed him to dip in the Jordan River seven times, and he was miraculously cured. In gratitude, Naaman offered Elisha gifts, but Elisha refused, declaring that the healing was an act of God, not a service for profit.

Gehazi’s Deceit

Gehazi, seeing an opportunity, ran after Naaman and lied, claiming Elisha had sent him to give two young prophets from Ephraim a talent of silver and two sets of clothing. Naaman, unaware of the deception, generously gave Gehazi two talents of silver and two sets of clothing. Gehazi hid the gifts and later lied to Elisha, saying he had gone nowhere.

Elisha’s Rebuke and Punishment

“Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money or to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, flocks, herds, or menservants and maidservants?” (2 Kings 5:26). He pronounced that “Naaman’s leprosy shall cling to you and to your descendants forever” (2 Kings 5:27). Immediately, Gehazi was struck with leprosy, described as “white as snow.”

This act of corporatization and trademarking is a modern parallel to Gehazi’s greed: what was freely given by God for the benefit of all has been turned into a tool for institutional control and profit.

Babylon = Antichrist: The act of trademarking and corporatizing the Spirit of Prophecy writings is a fulfillment of the warning against spiritual Babylon—church and state union, and the merchandising of God’s gifts. This is a betrayal of the original trust and a warning to all who would repeat Gehazi’s error.

The unfaithful acts of the trustees of the White Estate Inc. since Ellen White’s death stand as a cautionary tale: God’s grace, truth, and prophetic message are not for sale, and those who seek to profit from them risk spiritual leprosy and separation from God’s people.
